The ancient art and technique of “sliding on the waves” — or he’enalu — was popular among Hawaiians young and old, but especially the ali’i — or the royalty. Surfing has been a special and important part of Hawai’i since the earliest of days and continues to be practiced and revered today.
At Maui Surf Clinics, we teach our surf lessons on Maui with the past in mind. We know how sacred of a sport surfing was and the kind of remarkable relationship it forged between man and nature. Our Maui Surf Lessons bear in heart and mind the significance of where they are taught — Lahaina Breakwall. The Breakwall has been known as an idyllic surfing spot for ages and held in high esteem and often reserved for the ali’i back in ancient Hawai’i.
Keeping this in mind, we aim to preserve and protect both the environment and cultural aspects of surfing at the Breakwall when we teach our surf lessons. If you come sign up for a lesson with us, you will be sure to learn a lot about the physical, historical and spiritual side of the ancient sport and art of surfing!
