Surf lessons on Maui are exciting for many reasons! Maui Surf Clinics teaches its students at the Lahaina Breakwall — one of the most consistent and best waves for beginners on the island of Maui. Aside from the fantastic waves you find at the Breakwall, there are other amazing Hawaiian treasures as well…
The Hawaiian Monk Seal is a rare tropical exception to the standard, cold water seals found throughout most of the rest of the world. Hawaiian Monk Seals frequent Lahaina Breakwall and the surrounding areas and can often be found swimming around in the shallow waters or resting on the beach right outside the Maui Surf Clinic shop!
These creatures are currently endangered and there is much activism regarding their protection. The Hawaiian Monk Seal is also one of only two mammals endemic to the islands (the other being the Horny Bat). The seal feasts mainly on fish, spiny lobsters, octopuses and eels found in and around the reefs of Hawai’i. The Hawaiian name for the seal is ‘Ilio holo I ka uaua, meaning “dog the runs through water.”
When you join Maui Surf Clinics for a surf lesson on Maui, there is a good chance you will witness some spectacular marine life with us — including a Hawaiian Monk Seal! Come check us out today and enjoy surfing with Hawaii’s water dog.
